How to run the Pre-Upgrade Check against your current Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007

If you are planning to upgrade your SharePoint 2007 environment to 2010, you will want to make sure you run the Pre-Upgrade Check against your current SharePoint 2007 environment, so that you can address any issues before performing the upgrade.

In order to do so, you will need to make sure you are running SharePoint 2007 with Service Pack 2 installed. Once you confirm you are running Service Pack 2, you can run the Pre-Upgrade Check by following the steps below:

1) On your SharePoint 2007 server, launch the Command Prompt as an Administrator ("Run as administrator")

2) In the Command Prompt, navigate to:

%COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\bin

3) Then, enter:

STSADM.exe -o preupgradecheck

Once, the Pre-Upgrade Check completes, it will automatically open a browser window and display the results in an HTML report format.

As you can see in the processing of the Pre-Upgrade Check, the environment I am working with has a couple issues I need to address before upgrading to SharePoint 2010.

For more information on the "OSPrerequisite... Failed" error in the screenshot above, see Microsoft Knowledge Based Article KB954770.

This error message just tells me that the current SharePoint 2007 server farm has servers that are not running Windows Server 2008 64-bit edition or higher. I am not going to worry about this error message as I will be performing the upgrade to SharePoint 2010 by migration using the database attach method to a new environment with servers running Windows 2008 R2 64-bit edition.

For more information on the "InvalidDatabaseSchema... Aborted due to internal error" error in the screenshot above, see Microsoft Knowledge Based Article KB954772.

This error message just tells me that my current content database has a schema that differs from the standard Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 content database schema. It suggests that I detach these content database before upgrading.

In any case, you will want to go through your generated report, and make sure you address any issues listed in the report prior to upgrading your SharePoint 2007 to 2010.

Hope this helps!
