How to create a virtual machine (VM) on your PC for Windows 10 using Oracle VirtualBox?
1. Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/
2. Download the latest version of Virtual Box (currently 6.1 as of 5/29/2021)
3. Install Oracle Virtual Box on your PC
4. Launch Oracle VM Virtual Box
5. Click on the New button
6. On the Create Virtual Machine dialog, enter a Name [i.e. Win10x64] for the new virtual machine
7. Under Machine Folder, select Other… and browse to a location on your PC to create and store the virtual machine files
8. Under Type, select Microsoft Windows as the operating system
9. Under Version, select Windows 10 (64-bit)
10. Click Next
11. On the Memory Size dialog, enter the amount of memory for the virtual machine. It defaults to the recommended memory size of 2048 MB or 2 GB. Here in this example I am increasing that to 4096 MB or 4 GB.
12. Click Next
13. On the Hard Disk screen, select Create a virtual hard disk now
14. Click Create
15. On the Hard disk file type screen, select VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)
16. Click Next
17. On the Storage on physical hard disk screen, select Dynamically allocated
18. Click Next
19. On the File location and size screen, enter the size of the hard drive you want to create (i.e. 160 GB)
20. Click Create
At this point, you have successfully created an Oracle Virtual Box virtual machine configured to be able to run Windows 10 (64-bit) on your PC. In the next post, I will walk you through starting the newly create virtual machine, and installing the actual Windows 10 (64-bit) operating system on it.
