Review of Sabrent USB 3.2 Tool-Free Enclosure for NVMe PCI2 M Key M.2 SSD

Updated: May 29, 2021

I recently bought this enclosure on Amazon to upgrade my M.2 SSD hard drive on my laptop to a new Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe 2 TB SSD.

This is a very nice and solid Sabrent external enclosure that is super easy and convenient to use. Unlike other plastic enclosures I've purchased in the past, this enclosure is made of solid aluminum, feels very sturdy and durable, and provides great heat dissipation.

Now, I also own a couple of the Sabrent USB Type-C Aluminum Enclosure for M.2 NVMe SSD in Black (EC-NVME-BLK) that I could have used, but that would mean that I would have had to get a torx driver to unscrew and open the bottom cover, and then unscrew the screw that holds the drive onto the enclosure in order to swap the existing drive out with the new one.

So instead, I decided to purchase this enclosure for the fact that it is Tool-Less. You don't need a screwdriver or any tools to open or close this enclosure, nor to swap the drive in and out of the enclosure. The enclosure comes with a magnetic pin to hold the M.2 SSD in place, and detaches easily with a simple pull.

I also like that this "Tool Less" enclosure is available in silver as it allows me to easily distinguish it from my existing non-"Tool Less" ones in black.

Performance and compatibility wise, this enclosure worked perfectly with my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon's USB-C port and allowed me to clone 1 TB of data in about 1 hr and 19 minutes.

Having this enclosure as part of my toolbox makes working with M.2 SSD drives a whole lot faster and easier now.
